Sting Re-Sign Defenseman Bruce CoddArizona Sting Head Coach and General Manager Bob Hamley announced this week the signing of Assistant Captain Bruce Codd to a one-year contract.
"Bruce is one of the leaders on this team and we're thrilled to be bringing him back," said Hamley. "I've always thought that he's one of the most underrated players in our league because a lot of people underestimate his versatility. He's a very intelligent player that always puts in a solid effort on the floor and he sets an excellent example for the younger players to follow."
Last season Codd led Arizona in loose balls with 117. The 28-year old also dished out nine assists and logged 11 penalty minutes while appearing in all 16 games for the Sting. In 88 career NLL games Codd has registered 25 goals, 81 assists and 106 points in addition to 617 loose balls and 49 penalty minutes.
Originally drafted by Albany in the ninth round (66th overall) of the 1999 NLL Entry Draft, the five-foot-eight, 155 pound defenseman currently ranks second on Arizona's all-time loose balls list with 246. He ranks sixth in team history with 24 penalty minutes.
LumberJax Re-Sign Club Scoring Leader & Draft Pick
The Portland LumberJax have announced that Mike Hominuck and rookie D.J. Driscoll have been signed for the 2007 season. Hominuck joins the list of three Jax players who have re-signed one-year contracts with the club while Driscoll becomes the first player signed by Portland from the 2006 NLL Entry Draft.
By bringing back Hominuck for the 2007 season, the Jax expect to have a dominant goal scorer on the offensive end of the field. The Welland, Ontario native led Portland in scoring with 32 goals and 58 points last season. He also finished fifth on the squad in looseballs (74) and assists (26). Hominuck was claimed by the LumberJax in the 2005 NLL Expansion draft after previously playing with the Buffalo Bandits.
"Last year Mike was given an opportunity to contribute as a regular in the NLL, and he took full advantage of it," said Jax Head Coach/General Manager Derek Keenan. "Mike is a dynamic offensive player with tremendous speed, skill and quickness. We expect him to be one of our leaders on offense this season."
A graduate of Brock University in St. Catherines, Ontario, the 5-foot-10-inch, 170-pound athlete led his team to three straight university titles and captured the first-ever Canadian University Field Lacrosse (CUFL) National Championship. He was the top scorer in each championship game, registering a total of 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points and finishing his career with 174 points (averaging 5.1 points per game). Hominuck was named First Team All-Canadian and was a finalist for CULF's Outstanding Attackman and Outstanding Graduating Player of the Year in 2005.
D.J. Driscoll was the Jax fourth selection (third round, 36th overall) out of Notre Dame University in last month's Entry Draft. As a senior with the Fighting Irish, the Downingtown, Pa. native was named second-team All-American. During his 2005 junior campaign, Driscoll was honored as the Great Western Lacrosse League's (GWLL) Defensive Player of the Year. Driscoll received All-GWLL accolades every season with the Irish and led the team last season in groundballs with 67.
In addition to Hominuck, the Jax have now signed Adam Bysouth, Rich Morgan, Ray Guze and Jed Prossner. The club also received the rights to Scott Stapleford and Tyler Heavenor.
Dallas Eliuk, Pat Jones, Brodie Merrill, Peter Morgan and Ryan Powell are also now going into the second season of their individual two-year contracts. The LumberJax training camp takes place in mid-November in Vancouver, B.C where all returning players and new signees will compete for a position on the Jax roster for the upcoming 2007 season.
