TAVARES BREAKS GOAL SCORING RECORD

Tavares eclipses Gait's record in 17-13 win over New York

01/19/2008

Buffalo Bandits forward John Tavares, a 17-year league veteran, broke Gary Gait's all-time goal scoring record with a third quarter goal Saturday night against the New York Titans at HSBC Arena.

With four goals on the night, Tavares surpassed Gait's previous mark and established himself as the NLL's all-time goal scoring leader with 597 career tallies.

Tavares led the way for the Bandits' offense, notching four goals and two assists in Buffalo's second win of the season. Kevin Dostie scored three times, alongside three two-goal efforts from Delby Powless, Pat McCready and Mark Steenhuis. Goaltender Mike Thompson made 27 saves in net for the Bandits.

The game saw fast-paced and physical play from both teams who combined to score 17 first-half goals. The Titans dominated face-offs on the night, winning 23 of 28 draws. The New York powerplay, which had converted on 75% of their chances so far this season, fell short, scoring only six times on 15 chances.

Offensively, Casey Powell and Mike McLellan took control for the Titans, scoring five goals apiece. Matt Vinc stopped 26 shots in the loss.

Buffalo (2-1) will head to the Wachovia Center next Saturday, January 26th for a 7:30 PM EST meeting with the Philadelphia Wings.

New York (1-1) will take on the Toronto Rock on Saturday the 26th in the Air Canada Centre. Game time is 7 PM EST.
