IANNUCCI NEARS SCORING RECORD
Wings forward approaching Gait's single-season goal scoring record
04/09/2008
Athan Iannucci is only seven goals away from tying the league record for most goals scored by one player during the course of a season. The Philadelphia Wings forward has scored 54 goals through 12 games. The league record for goals scored in a season is 61, set by Gary Gait in 2003 while playing for Colorado. Gait still owns the top three single-season goal scoring performances. In addition to his record-setting 61 in 2003, the NLL Hall of Famer scored 57 goals in 1998 and 55 goals in 2004, the second and third highest single-season totals of all time.Iannucci has scored 54 goals in the Wings' 12 games played so far this season, scoring an average of 4.5 goals per game. He is seven goals away from tying Gait's record and eight away from breaking the record. The record could potentially fall this weekend, as Philadelphia plays twice. The Wings play at Portland on Friday night and at Minnesota on Saturday.
"Athan is a very gifted lacrosse player," said Wings head coach Dave Huntley. "It's amazing that in his second year as a pro that he has been able to play at such a high level each night. He is an instrumental part of the team success that we have had this season."
Iannucci is playing in just his second NLL season. Selected by Philadelphia in the first round (eighth overall pick) of 2006 Entry Draft out of Hofstra, he scored 30 goals and tallied 24 assists for 54 points during his rookie season of 2007.
