Rochester Knighthawks General Manager Regy Thorpe announced today that the team has signed Rochester native Joe Walters to a one-year deal."I am very excited to be a part of the Knighthawks. I have been a fan since I was 8 years old," said Walters. "I am excited for the challenge to play a new game. I am playing for the Knighthawks to win another championship."
"The organization is extremely excited to sign a local player of Joe's caliber. We feel Joe will make an immediate impact for us and his athleticism will increase our speed out the front door," said Thorpe. "He's a great young man that has excelled at every level he has played and we expect the same in the indoor game. I feel Joe will be one our best signings of the offseason. He's excited to start proving himself in the indoor game and can't wait to get started."
Walters was originally drafted by the Buffalo Bandits in the second round (18th overall) in the 2006 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft. Following a standout NCAA lacrosse career at the University of Maryland, he will now concentrate on making the transition to the indoor game this season.
In college, Walters was a four-time All-American at the University of Maryland and the 2006 recipient of the Jack Turnbull Memorial Award as the Attackman of the Year. He was also a candidate for the Tewaaraton Trophy, given to the National Player of the Year. In addition, he was the only current college player selected to the 2006 U.S. National Team. Walters played his high school lacrosse at Irondequoit, a suburb of Rochester.
Walters and the rest of the Knghthawks players will take to the floor on the weekend of November 14-16, when training camp officially opens.
