Miss Western Massachusetts excited for Blazers home debut

The expansion Boston Blazers have already played their first road game, but they'll have the support of Gina and 'The Sparks' dance team when they make their home debut at Boston's TD Banknorth Garden on Saturday. Gina, who is currently a full-time student at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, keeps busy in the community as the reigning Miss Western Massachusetts, while she studies for a career as a Dental Hygienist.

"It was something I was always interested in," said Gina. "It wasn't my major at first, but I worked as a dental assistant to get a feel for it. It's definitely my calling."

The native of East Longmeadow, MA got off to a fast start, taking her first dance classes at age two, and teaching them at age 16 -- but her audition with the Blazers dance team at the Garden was Gina's first competitive dance experience.

"It was very exciting for me because I've never danced in such a large venue before," she said. "I love dance so much that I would never want the kind of pressure of a career in the field. It's something that I enjoy and do for me, but not to support me."

As Miss Western Massachusetts, a title for the Miss America Scholarship Organization, Gina has had the opportunity to be an embassador in her community for the Children's Miracle Network. She's visited local school systems and hospitals to endorse the Bright Smiles program, which promotes the importance of oral health.
