JOHN TAVARES SELECTED FIRST IN NHL DRAFT
06/26/2009
John Tavares, the 18-year old nephew of the Buffalo Bandits forward and NLL scoring leader John Tavares, was the first player selected in the National Hockey League's 2009 Entry Draft. The younger Tavares, who has been a top hockey prospect since the age of 14, was drafted by the New York Islanders."He's a dynamic hockey player," Islanders General Manager Garth Snow told Adam Kimelman of NHL.com. "He's a very special kid, a good kid. When you get a chance to add a piece of the puzzle like we did today, it's a good thing for the organization and for our fans."
The elder John Tavares, an 18-year veteran of professional indoor lacrosse, is a four-time league champion who holds the league's career scoring records for goals, assists and points.
