Copy by Peter Flynn for NLL.comWith the recent news that Cody Jamieson will not be entering the 2009 National Lacrosse League Entry draft, Zack Greer of Bryant University now has the potential to be the first offensive player drafted on September 9th at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. Zack Greer is a 6'2, 190 pound attackman who has played his lacrosse for Duke and Bryant University.
Greer had one of the most prolific college lacrosse careers of all time. In 2005, his rookie season, Zack Greer led Duke University to the NCAA Division I Championship Game. That same year Greer set a NCAA rookie record with 57 goals; he also added 72 total points and had four game winning goals on a phenomenal .491 shooting percentage. Greer was named to the All-American third team and was Inside Lacrosse's National Rookie of the Year.
After a shortened 2006 season Greer returned to form in 2007. Greer scored 67 goals which was good enough for the most in the nation and the third most of all time. Greer also recorded 94 points, the seventeenth most in league history, 6 game winning goals and 59 ground balls. In Duke's run to the NCAA Tournament run to the National championship game Greer recorded 20 points which was the seventh most in NCAA tournament history. Greer was selected to the first team All-American and All Tournament teams in 2007.
In 2009 Greer continued his productivity with a nation leading 65 goals making him the only ACC player to record 50 goals in three seasons. Greer also recorded 44 groundballs. Greer along with The Colorado Mammoth's Matt Danowski became one of the top scoring duos of all time with a combined 192 points in 2008 which is just one point short of the NCAA record. In 2008 Greer was named a USILA All-American and received the Lt. Col. J.I. Turnbull Award winner for the nation's top attackman.
With an extra year of eligibility Greer joined his former coach Mike Pressler at Bryant University. In Bryant's first season of Division I play Greer led the team with 42 goals for 68 points and 5 game winners. In 82 games Greer is the NCAA all time leading goal and points scorer with 248 and 353 respectively. Greer is also third in goals per game with 3.03.
Greer was a member of the Canadian National team during the 2003 ILF Under-19 World Championships. In six games Greer scored 16 goals for 17 points and was named to the ILF All World team.
The Whitby, Ontario native played for the Whitby Warriors in the Ontario Lacrosse Association. In 40 games for the Warriors Greer tallied 72 goals and 72 assists for 144 points. Greer was named the MVP of his team and the league's playoffs. Greer is also an excellent hockey player who was drafted by the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League.
Greer has already expressed interest in playing in the NLL. In an interview with Inside Lacrosse when asked if the NLL was in his plans Zack said "Yeah absolutely. My brother [Bill Greer of the Orlando Titans] is playing there right now, so it would be nice to get in there and play with him."
Zack has been praised by many during his lacrosse career including Zack's college coach Mike Pressler who said in an interview with Inside Lacrosse "Certainly [Zack's] abilities on the field are second to none and is arguably the best offensive player in division I game today, but what he brings to us are so many of the other intangibles, the example he sets the leadership end, Zack was recently named one of our four captains the players elected him after just four weeks of fall practice" Pressler went on to say regarding Zack's setting an example for younger players "The example he sets not only on the field but off the field academically, how you handle yourself , Zack Greer is the ultimate professional that way." Greer will certainly be a first round pick in Wednesday's draft in Buffalo.
