DAN STROUP ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

13-Year vet won four championships during stellar career

10/27/2009

Dan Stroup, a forward who played 13 seasons in the NLL, has informed the league that he is retiring from his playing career, effective immediately. Stroup currently sits 12th on the league's all-time goal scoring list with 294. He played on four championship teams, winning three titles in Toronto (1999, 2000 & 2002) and one in Colorado (2006).

In 182 career regular season games, Stroup scored 294 goals and 235 assists for 529 points. A durable and dependable player, he was in the lineup for all but four games (182 out of a possible 186) during his thirteen seasons.

He was also a fixture in the playoffs, as his teams reached the postseason eight times. He played some of his best lacrosse in the playoffs, scoring 30 goals and 13 assists (43 points) in 14 career playoff games.

"I just felt it was time. I had a good career, a lot of great memories, and made friends for life along the way", said Stroup, from his home in Vancouver, BC.

When asked about what has changed the most since his first pro season in 1995, he said "no more (players wearing) spandex", with a laugh. "Seriously though, the league has become very professional, from the players to the coaches to the people managing the teams".

Stroup is also a professional firefighter for the city of Vancouver. He admits it will be an adjustment to follow the league as a fan this season, but a return to bench could happen--as a coach.

"Coaching in the NLL is something I would definitely be open to, if the opportunity were to present itself", said Stroup. "This game has been great to me, and I'd like to give something back through coaching." The 40-year old currently coaches his three daughters, all lacrosse players, at home in the Vancouver area.
