Get to Know Draft Prospect: Shane Simpson

A 2013 Under Armour All-America selection heading into his first year at North Carolina, Shane Simpson quickly made a name for himself on the team as he led freshmen on the team in goals, assists and points. After an injury-plagued sophomore year, Simpson was a key cog on a 2016 Tar Heel squad that upset perennial powerhouse Maryland in overtime in the NCAA Tournament to win the national championship.

Simpson also had the opportunity to play Junior A Lacrosse for the Six Nation Arrows, helping the team win the 2014 Minto Cup in the process.

When did you start playing lacrosse?

Started playing lacrosse when I was 6 – got my first stick for Christmas.

Did you play any other sports growing up?

Played AAA hockey and just about every sport at school. Always enjoyed competing in sports I wasn’t the best at. Golf is something I’ve always been passionate about for as long as I can remember.

What do you think your biggest strengths in your game are?

Biggest strengths are my speed and ability to play at both ends of the floor.

Do you see your game as having any weaknesses?

Everyone’s game has places to improve. Continuing to workout and get stronger would help my game.

Who was your favorite player growing up that you tried to model your game after?

I always remember Steve Toll being the fastest guy watching the Rock when I was younger. I wouldn’t say I modeled my game after anyone in particular, but I always strived to be the fastest guy on the floor.

How did your 2016 Tar Heels team manage to win the National Championship after being unseeded heading into the tournament?

We managed to gel at the right time and buy into the system. Every guy on the team had a role and never strayed from the plan. Winning the 2014 Minto Cup and the 2016 NCAA Championship were both rewarding – but winning with the Heels was incredible because we were the underdogs.

What is your favorite food?

If Mom’s asking – her taco salad. Anyone else – Chick-fil-A.
