John Tavares of the Buffalo Bandits and John Grant Jr. of the Colorado Mammoth have been named captains for the 2012 NLL All-Star game.
Tavares, the league’s all-time leading scorer, will be making a record 10th All-Star appearance
He will be assisted on the East Division squad by Pat McCready from the Rochester Knighthawks. The NLL's reigining Defensive Player of the Year is a three-time All-Star selection.
Toronto captain Colin Doyle, who was also selected as an assistant and scheduled to play in his 10th All-Star game, withdrew on Monday. Doyle has played in just one game since Jan. 27 while dealing with a lower-body injury.
"Although it is a great honor to be asked to represent the Rock ... my health has to take priority at this time," Doyle said in a statement. "With the bulk of our schedule coming up here in the next month and a half, I need to focus on getting 100 percent healthy."
A replacement for Doyle will be named.
Grant, who will make his eighth All-Star appearance, currently leads the league with 23 goals and 52 points.
Shawn Williams of the Edmonton Rush and Andrew Suitor of the Minnesota Swarm were chosen as assistant captains of the West team.
Williams, a seven-time All-Star, will represent the Rush for the first time. Suitor will make his All-Star debut.
The 2012 NLL All-Star Game takes place Saturday, Feb. 25 at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, home of the Bandits. Game time is 7 p.m. ET. Tickets can be ordered by clicking here. Fans can watch the game on ESPN3 in the United States and The NLL Network at NLL.com in Canada and worldwide.
