Former Wing Gewas Schindler scored at 4:23 of overtime to give the Columbus Landsharks a 15-14 win over the Philadelphia Wings in front of 13,726 fans at the First Union Center Saturday. The loss was the Wings' third straight.
Columbus opened the game with a goal from Ryan Stopper and took a two-goal lead with a power-play goal by Barrett Church. Tom Marchek scored the first Wings goal of the night with a blast from the left side. Stopper added his
second tally of the night to round out the scoring in the quarter.
The Wings outscored the Landsharks, 7-4, in the second quarter to take the lead. Despite two own goals on miscues by Philadelphia goalie Chris Sanderson, the Wings were able to get their offense going. Kevin Finneran and Mark Millon sparked the offense with two goals in the first minute of play and Millon later completed the hat trick during a Philadelphia four-goal scoring streak. Marchek also completed the hat trick with two goals in the quarter, while Jeff Ratcliffe contributed with one goal.
Columbus evened the score at eight with the first goal of the third quarter, but the rest of the period belonged to Philadelphia. Sanderson stopped eight Landsharks' shots, while Marechek, Ratcliffe and Finneran each scored goals to give the Wings an 11-8 lead going into the final quarter.
The Landsharks got back in the game with two quick goals to start the fourth quarter and added four more to force overtime. Tom Ryan, Finneran and Ratcliffe each scored goals in the quarter for Philadelphia, with Finneran and Ratcliffe completing hat tricks.
Marechek led the Wings in scoring with six points (4G,2A). Four other players scored goals for Philadelphia, including Millon (3G,3A), Finneran (3G,2A), Ryan(1G,2A) and Ratcliffe (3G,2A).
Kyle Arbuckle led the Landsharks in scoring with six points (3G,3A). Seven other players scored for Columbus, including Spencer Martin (1G), Stopper (2G), Cory Kahoun (2G), Brarett Church (2G), Mark Steenhuis (1G,2A),
Kasey Beirnes (2G) and Derek Suddons (1G,2A).
