By National Lacrosse League

The National Lacrosse League has announced the start of the free agent signing period on August 29th.

A Restricted Free Agent is a player with at least three years of NLL experience, and has played in a minimum of 23 games. When a restricted free agent signs an offer sheet to play for a new team, the player's existing team has 72 hours to match the value of the contract offered by the new team. If the existing team matches the offer, the player must re-sign with his existing team.

An Unrestricted Free Agent is a player with at least six years of NLL experience, and is at least 32 years of age. An Unrestricted Free Agent can lose his free agency if he is declared a Franchise Player by his current team. By doing so, the player's current team automatically signs the player to a one-year contract and agrees to pay him a salary of ten percent over the League maximum player salary of $18,750 (US DOLLARS), giving the Franchise Player a salary of $20,625. Each team can designate up to two Franchise Players.

* There are special circumstances regarding the free agent players of the Montreal Express. Montreal has suspended operations for the upcoming season, and a Dispersal Draft will be held (please see the next press release).

Ted Dowling, who was previously tagged as a Franchise Player by Montreal, is now an Unrestricted Free Agent. In the event that Dowling signs a contract prior to the Dispersal Draft, the team signing Dowling loses its first round selection in the Dispersal Draft. The same conditions apply to any team who signs Travis Kilgour or Dean Harrison, who have both been granted a limited free agency status until the draft. Kilgour and Harrison may sign with any club up until the dispersal draft. If either Kilgour or Harrison not sign prior to the dispersal draft, they may be selected in the draft and will be deemed Restricted Free Agents.

Bruce Alexander, Bruce Codd, Matt Giles and Jason Crosbie all qualify as Restricted Free Agents. These players will not be eligible for free agency until after the Dispersal Draft has been held. Any team drafting a Restricted Free Agent is drafting the right to match an offer made to the player by another club.
