The New Jersey Storm announce the signing of newcomer Brian LaMastro and returning player Dan Leidl to contracts for the 2002-2003 season.
Acquired in a trade with the Toronto Rock on October 30, 2002, LaMastro comes to the Storm after originally being drafted as the Rock's 12th selection (109th overall) in the 2002 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft. The Bridgewater, NJ native recently graduated from the University of Hartford where he was named the America East Conference Player of the Year while also finishing as the nation's second leading scorer.
In exchange for LaMastro, Toronto receives a conditional draft choice from the Storm in the 2003 Entry Draft.
A defensive practice player with the club last season, Leidl will look to gain a full-time spot this season. The Long Valley, NJ native played collegiate ball for Drew University, currently ranking eighth all-time at Drew with 104 groundballs in a season. He also played this summer for Ireland in the World Lacrosse Championships in Australia.
Both players along with the rest of the club's veterans will compete this weekend at the Storm's main training camp at The Center Circle in Rahway, NJ.
Last season, the expansion Storm won four of its last six contests to finish at (5-11). The team averaged nearly 6,000 fans per home game at the Continental Airlines Arena. New Jersey recently traded for two of the top scorers in the NLL, Roy Colsey and Mike Benedict, to help bolster its offense. The Storm will open this season on the road versus the Rochester Knighthawks on Saturday, December 28 at 7:35 p.m. The team opens at home on Saturday, January 4 vs. Columbus at 7:30 p.m. Eight-game and four-game season ticket plans are on sale now by calling 1-866-NJ STORM.
