(Rochester, NY): Rochester Knighthawks General Manager Jody Gage announced today the re-signing of National Lacrosse League All-Star Derek Malawsky and defenseman Marshall Abrams.
Both players begin their second seasons with the Knighthawks after being acquired during the 2001 offseason. Malawsky came over from the Buffalo Bandits and made an immediate impact, playing alongside his brother, Curt. In his first season as a Knighthawk, he finished third on the team in points (71), second in assists (47) and fourth in goals (24). He set a career high in points and tied his best season with 47 assists. His assist total was the third best in team history and his point total was fifth best all-time. Malawsky also played for the North team at the 2002 NLL All-Star Game.
Abrams enters his third season in the NLL. The Syracuse University star was an All-Rookie team member in 2000-01 with the Columbus Landsharks. While at SU, he was a three-time All-American and the NCAA 2000 Defenseman of the Year. He was also named to the NCAA All-Tournament team in 1999 and 2000. Abrams was a member of the 2000 NCAA Division I National Championship team. He was acquired by Rochester during the 2001 offseason from the Columbus Landsharks, along with Pat Campbell, for Brad MacArthur and Jason Crosbie.
The Rochester Knighthawks also announced the releasing of Chris Powless, Al Terrilli and Marvin Barr. The team continues its training camp this weekend, as Rochester travels to play in a four-team scrimmage at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario, on Sunday, December 1st. The K-Hawks, Columbus Landsharks, Toronto Rock and Albany Attack will play mini-games from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The scrimmage is closed to the public.
