The Wings shut out Colorado in the final quarter to overtake the Mammoth, 13-11, Saturday at the First Union Center in front of 13,848 fans. Goalie Dallas Eliuk stopped all 14 shots in the last quarter and Jeff Ratcliffe scored the game winner to give the Wings their first win of the season. Paul Cantabene led Philadelphia with five goals and an assist in his home debut with the Wings.
"It's great to be back home," said Wings' coach Adam Mueller. "After starting on the road last season, we started a winning streak when we came home. It's great for the guys and a great confidence booster."
Colorado started the action with an early goal by Bryan Cole. The Wings quickly answered with a breakaway goal by Andrew Guindon, but the Mammoth capitalized on two power plays to take a two-goal lead. Philadelphia ended the quarter with two goals by Paul Cantabene, including one on the man-advantage, to even the score at three.
The Mammoth opened up the scoring in the second quarter just 21 seconds into play on a goal by Ted Dowling. The Wings responded with two goals to take their first lead of the game. Cantabene completed the hat trick and assisted
on a goal by Tom Marechek. The two teams traded goals twice before the Mammoth netted three in a row to regain the lead. Philadelphia had the last say in the half with Marechek's second goal of the quarter. The Wings trailed, 9-8, going into the locker rooms.
Colorado scored first for the third straight quarter to take a two-goal lead, but Philadelphia netted two in 14 seconds (Henderson, Cantabene) to tie the game. Henderson added a third goal, short-handed, but Gait tallied his third to tie the game at 11 going into the final quarter.
Dallas Eliuk stopped all 14 Colorado shots in the fourth quarter to hold the Mammoth scoreless. Jeff Ratcliffe scored midway through the period to give the Wings the permanent lead and Cantabene added his fifth goal to secure
Paul Cantabene led the Wings in scoring with six points (5G,1A). Five other players scored goals for Philadelphia, including Tony Henderson (2G,2A), Keith Cromwell (2G), Tom Marechek (2G,3A), Andrew Guindon (1G,1A) and Jeff Ratcliffe (1G,5A).
Gary Gait led the Mammoth in scoring with six points (3G,3A). Six other players scored for Colorado, including Del Halladay (2G,2A), Brian Langtry (1G), Ted Dowling (2G,4A), Bryan Cole (1G), Matt Oglesby (1G) and Fred Jenner (1G,1A).
