Ravens' Cam Sedgwick named Rookie of the Month
Buffalo Bandits forward John Tavares and Columbus Landsharks forward Pat Maddalena have been named co-winners of the National Lacrosse League Player of the Month Award for December-January. The two players received an equal amount of votes from the league's head coaches and general managers for the award. The December-January award covers games played from December 27th through January 31st.
Tavares scored 22 goals and added 16 assists (38 points) during the Bandits' five games in December and January, leading Buffalo to a 4-1 start. "John is a complete player," said Kurt Silcott, general manager of the Buffalo Bandits. "In addition to all of the scoring, John is not afraid to go into the corners, do the dirty work and scoop up the loose balls. He truly leads this team by example." Tavares was named Overall Player of the Week for Week #6 of the season (5 goals, 6 assists and 8 loose balls in a 19-16 win against Columbus).
Tavares adds this award to an impressive personal list of achievements. The Bandits forward was name League MVP of the 2000-2001 season. Tavares was chosen as Offensive Player of the Week three times and Overall Player of the Week once during the 2001-2002 season. The Toronto native has been named to the league's All-Pro First Team nine times in his career.
Maddalena scored 15 goals and added 13 assists (28 points) as the Landsharks got off to a 4-1 start to become the early team turnaround story of the season. The Welland, Ontario native has also provided veteran leadership to the youngest team in the NLL. "Pat has provided a huge spark to our young team-both on and off the floor," said Bob Hamley, head coach of the Columbus Landsharks. Maddalena is now playing in his fourth NLL season, and was named NLL Offensive Player of the Week for Week #4 of the season (5 goals, 5 assists and 11 loose balls in a 14-13 win against Albany).
The Rookie of the Month Award goes to Vancouver Ravens forward Cam Sedgwick. The Vancouver native scored nine goals and added ten assists (19 points) in four games for the Ravens (2-2) during December and January. "Cam has been a versatile player for us this season," said Ravens head coach Paul Dal Monte. "His play at both ends of the floor has been the catalyst for our transition game." Sedgwick was named Rookie of the Week for Week #2 of the season (4 goals, 3 assists and 5 loose balls in a 14-10 win against Philadelphia).
Note: Sedgwick played in one regular season game for the Ravens last season. A player who plays in five games or less during his rookie season is still considered a rookie in his second season.
