The Arizona Sting defeated the Anaheim Storm in triple-overtime, 19-18, in front of 6,476 fans at the Arrowhead Pond in the NLL's first ever regular season game in Southern California. Peter Lough (2G) scored the game-winner 45 seconds into the third overtime to end the game after nearly three hours of grueling action. The game marked the first time in the league's 18 year history that a game went into a third overtime.
The game nearly ended on a controversial play in the first overtime. Casey Powell scored what seemed to be the game-winning goal for Anaheim, however, the goal was disallowed, and the game continued.
Powell led the Storm with four goals and two assists. Scott Stewart (3G, 2A), Marc Morley (4G, 1A) and Mike Law (2G, 2A) all played well in Anaheim's debut. Matt Roik recorded 42 saves between the pipes for the Storm.
Pat Maddalena (5G, 3A), Cory Bomberry (4G, 4A), Dan Dawson (2G, 3A), Gewas Schindler (1G, 6A) and Kasey Beirnes (3G, 1A) led the Sting. Mike Miron played well in goal, racking up 48 saves.
Anaheim (0-1) will host the Buffalo Bandits next Sunday, January 18th, at 5:30 PM at Arrowhead Pond. Arizona (2-1) will meet the Colorado Mammoth on Sunday, January 25th at the Pepsi Center in Denver, CO.
