The Arizona Sting rallied late with five goals in the fourth quarter and kept their playoff hopes alive with a 14-13 win over the Colorado Mammoth in front of 5,521 at the Glendale Arena. Cory Bomberry led the Sting with three goals, including the game-winner, and five assists.
Colorado led 11-9 after Brian Langtry scored 1:20 into the final quarter. However, Arizona scored four straight goals to take a 13-11 lead. Langtry struck again with under five minutes remaining, but Cory Bomberry responded less than 30 seconds remaining with the game-winning goal.
Pat Maddalena (3G, 3A), Dan Dawson (2G, 4A), Gewas Scindler (2G, 1A) and Lindsay Plunkett (1G, 5A) joined Bomberry on the top of the Arizona scoresheet. Mike Miron earned the win in goal with 35 saves.
Gary Gait scored five goals and one assist to lead Colorado, while Brian Langtry added three goals and two assists. Five other players were held to one goal apiece, including Gavin Prout. Gee Nash recorded 39 saves in goal.
All-Star defensemen Jay Jalbert and Jamie Hanford, did play. The duo made the trip this weekend and may see action on Sunday in Calgary.
Arizona improves to 6-7, and remains in the hunt for a playoff spot in the Western Division. The team has a week off before a home-and-home series with the Vancouver Ravens (4-8). The Sting meet the San Jose Stealth (6-4) in the league's season finale, where the winner could walk away with the final playoff spot. The teams are currently tied head-to-head at 1-1, and the winning team would own tiebreakers.
Colorado falls to 10-3, and will have to wait until at least next week to win the Western Division title. The Mammoth meet the second-place Calgary Roughnecks (7-4) on Sunday.
