Several teams open camp, others in scrimmage action

With less than five weeks until opening night of the regular season, training camps are opening, and some teams are already holding scrimmages against other clubs. Rochester and Edmonton faced off on Saturday, while camps in Philly, Washington & Calgary are now open.

The Philadelphia Wings gather around at the first day of the team's 2011 season training camp.

As the first weekend of December arrives, the start of the 2011 season is five weeks away. Here are the latest training camp updates:

Philadelphia Wings open camp

The Philadelphia Wings opened training camp on Saturday at the Bucksmont Indoor Sports Center in Hatfield, Pennsylvania. The Wings have confirmed that forward Merrick Thomson is still in the process of recovery from concussion related injuries, and will not be medically cleared in time for the start of the regular season. Thomson however remains upbeat, and is working towards his return. Read more about Thomson at the Wings' official website, Wingslax.com.

The Wings have invited 36 players to camp for practice sessions at Bucksmont and two preseason scrimmages at the Minnesota Swarm on Saturday, December 11 at 8 p.m. and at the Buffalo Bandits on Sunday, December 12 at 2 p.m.

Standouts returning from the 2010 season include forward Drew Westervelt, transition player Max Siebald and defender Bill McGlone.
