In a pair of trades completed on Friday, the Edmonton Rush traded Shawn Williams to the Minnesota Swarm in exchange for their 2nd round selection in the 2013 Entry Draft and an acquired 2nd round selection in the 2013 Entry Draft.
Upon acquiring Williams, Minnesota traded their 5th, 14th, 18th overall selections in the 2012 Entry Draft, Brendan Doran and Shawn Williams to the Buffalo Bandits in exchange for their 3rd overall selection in the 2012 Entry Draft.
A member of the Bandits in 2000 and 2001,Williams returns to Buffalo after spending 10 seasons in Rochester from 2002 to 2011 and playing in Edmonton in 2012. The Swarm acquired Williams from Edmonton in a separate deal today.
"Shawn will help add some scoring to our roster," said Bandits general manager Steve Dietrich. "He is a great teammate on and off the floor and understands how special it is to be a Buffalo Bandit."
Williams recorded 68 points (16+52) and eight penalty minutes in Edmonton last season, leading the Rush in points and ranking sixth in the league in assists. He added 13 points (2+11) in three playoff games. In his career, Williams has totaled 1,038 points (412+626) and 117 penalty minutes in 223 games with Edmonton, Rochester, Buffalo and Toronto/Ontario.
Doran (5'8", 180 lbs. 2/6/86) is entering his third NLL season after playing nine games in Minnesota last season and five as a member of the Toronto Rock in 2010. In 14 career games, he has tallied seven points (4+3) and 10 penalty minutes.
"Brendon is a young, gritty defenseman and will fit very well into our defensive system," Dietrich said.
Fresh off a trip to the Western Division Finals, the Swarm now hold three consecutive first-round selections with picks #2, #3, and #4 in this year’s upcoming draft in September. Minnesota also holds the final selection in the first-round with the #10 pick, giving the team a league-high four first-round selections.
“We obviously gave up a lot, but we had a lot of resources in this year’s draft,” Owner & President John Arlotta said. “We’re very excited to be able to make three straight picks at #2, #3, and #4. It will be a very exciting time for Swarm Lacrosse.”
Edmonton GM & Head Coach Derek Keenan provides his team’s perspective. “Shawn Williams did exactly what we needed him to do for the Rush in 2012 by leading a young offensive group to the NLL Final. But on Aug. 1, Shawn was due to become an unrestricted free agent, so to get two high draft picks in 2013, which is another deep draft class, is a positive move for the organization. It continues our mandate of building with young talent.”
