The Indian Country Today Media Network has reported that the Iroqouis Nationals have been awarded rights to host the 2015 World Indoor Lacrosse Championships. Sam Laskaris reports that the round-robin and quarter-final matches will be staged at the Onondaga Nation Arena near Syracuse, NY, and that the semi-final contests as well as the gold-medal and bronze-medal games will be held at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo.
The early round games played at Onondaga Nation Arena are believed to be the first time a world championship will be held on Aboriginal land. Iroquois Nationals General Manager and former NLL player Gewas Schindler told Laskaris, "This is huge for Indigenous people throughout the world. It’s recognizing our people as a sovereign nation and as a country.”
