Kiel Matisz of Robert Morris University could be one of the players the Swarm select in the first round of the 2012 Draft on Monday.
With a league-high four first-round selections in the 2012 NLL Entry Draft, the Minnesota Swarm are set to re-write the history books on Monday in Toronto. The Swarm will make three consecutive selections with picks No. 2, 3 and 4, and by doing so, will become the first franchise in NLL history to hold three of the draft’s Top 4 picks. Minnesota closes out the first-round with the No. 10 overall pick.
The 2012 NLL Entry Draft can be seen live on NLL.com starting at 7pm Eastern on Monday from The Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto. Swarm fans are invited to watch the draft that evening at Joseph’s Grill in St. Paul during the team’s official viewing party.
“We are very excited to have four first-round draft picks this year, especially to hold three of the top four picks,” Swarm Owner and President John Arlotta said. “There are some great players in this year’s draft, which now looks to be one of the deepest in recent memory with the recent addition of several early entry players.”
The Edmonton Rush currently holds the No. 1 pick and are expected to take lefty forward Mark Matthews from the University of Denver. That leaves the draft’s next three picks in the hands of the Swarm, who will make their highest selection in team history with the No. 2 overall pick. Outside the first round, the Swarm will make an additional five selections between rounds 3-6, which gives the team nine total picks, tying a team-mark set during the 2011 NLL Entry Draft.
“Our four first-round draft picks and the other remaining five selections that we have will enable us to create strong competition for jobs during this year’s training camp,” Arlotta said. “We believe that between our draft picks and our open tryout camp, we will be able to improve our roster again for the 2013 season.”
Last season, the Swarm featured the youngest team in the NLL and a league-high 12 rookies saw floor time, which included first-rounders and All-Rookie team members TJordan MacIntosh and G Evan Kirk. Minnesota is coming off a 9-7 regular season finish and its first trip to the West Division Finals in 2012.
The NLL Mock Draft on IL Indoor.com predicts the Swarm will select Brock Sorensen (Ohio State), Kiel Matisz (Robert Morris) and Shayne Jackson (Langley WLA) and Robbie Campbell (Stoney Brook) with the first round selections.
