With the start of training camp just days away, the Philadelphia Wings have signed 13 players to one-year contracts for the 2013 National Lacrosse League season. The Wings agreed to terms with newly-acquired forward Kevin Buchanan, 2012 fifth-round draft pick C.J. Costabile (39th overall), defensemen Paul Dawson, Steve Holmes, Jim Forsythe and Tom Guadagnolo, forward Joe Vitale, goalies Brett Perras, Alex Fortier and Chris Collins, transition player Ethan Farrell, and local products Kevin Kaminski and Brian Teuber.
The Wings acquired Kevin Buchanan in an offseason trade that sent Mike Hominuck and David Brock to the Buffalo Bandits. Buchanan, a Maryland native and Ohio State grad, will face off against his former team right away when Philadelphia hosts the Bandits for their home opener on Friday, Jan. 11 at Wells Fargo Center. The athletic forward scored 29 points (10+19) in 15 games for Buffalo last year.
C.J. Costabile was an NCAA lacrosse standout and helped guide Duke University to a 15-5 record as a senior last season. The 2012 ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Year led the team with 144 loose balls and figures to strengthen the Wings defense this season.
Defenseman Paul Dawson is entering his third season with the Wings. The 6’5”, 225 lb. enforcer recorded six assists, 67 penalty minutes and 53 loose balls in 16 games last year while playing alongside his brother, Dan.
Steve Holmes played 15 games last season and registered three assists. The five-year NLL veteran scooped 41 loose balls in 2012, including four in the Wings' first-round playoff game.
Goaltender Chris Collins, a former D-I All-American at the University of Delaware, returns to the team after being part of the Wings practice squad in 2009 with two previous years of NLL experience.
Tom Guadagnolo, who captained Syracuse University to the NCAA D-I National Championship in 2008 and 2009, and Jim Forsythe, a three-year starter at Widener University and former Wings practice squad player, look to provide the Wings with some depth on defense.
Ethan Farrell, a Nantucket, MA native and NCAA D-III All-American at Lynchburg University, agreed to contract terms, while local players Kevin Kaminski (University of Delaware) and Brian Teubel (Drexel University) rounded out Philadelphia's signings.
The Wings hold their first session of training camp on the weekend of Dec. 1-2 at BucksMont Indoor Sports Center in Hatfield, PA. From Dec. 21-22, the team travels to Oakville, Ontario, where camp sessions include a scrimmage against the Toronto Rock at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. The exhibition scrimmage is open free of charge to the public. Seating for these games is extremely limited with less than 800 spectators being admitted.
