The Minnesota Swarm have signed transition player Brock Sorensen, the second overall pick of the 2012 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft, to a one-year deal pending league approval as the team prepares for the start of training camp this weekend.

Sorensen, 23, became the highest draft pick in Swarm history this past October and was one of Minnesota’s four first-round selections this year. The Peterborough, Ontario native spent his collegiate career at Ohio State University as one of the nation’s most decorated midfielders from 2009-12, and was a two-time captain for the Buckeyes. In 2011, Sorensen became Ohio State’s first true junior to be named a captain since 2005. As a senior last spring, Sorensen recorded 12 goals and 10 ground balls in 14 games. With his 6'6", 220 lb. frame, Sorensen was highly regarded as the top defensive and transition player in this year’s draft.

Sorensen joins the Swarm with playing experience under head coach Joe Sullivan and alongside team captain Andrew Suitor.

“What we found in Brock was truly the full package player,” Sullivan said. “He can do it on the floor, he can do it the locker room…everything we’ve looked for, he’s going to bring. We don’t want to put too much pressure on him too early, but I think you are going to find that Brock is going to get his feet underneath him really quickly and establish himself in this league.”

Sorensen and the rest of the Swarm’s 2012 draft choices will hit the floor during the team’s rookie camp on Thursday at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre in Oakville, Ontario. Minnesota officially opens its first main camp session on Friday, Nov. 30 and will play the Colorado Mammoth on Saturday, Dec. 1 in an exhibition contest. The team opens the regular season on Saturday, Jan. 12 on the road against the Buffalo Bandits. Minnesota's home opener at Xcel Energy Center is Saturday, Jan. 26 against the Washington Stealth.
