Toronto and Philadelphia play tightly-contested exhibition

The Toronto Rock defeated the Philadelphia Wings by a score of 12-9 in NLL preseason action at Toronto Rock Athletic Centre (TRAC) on Saturday night.

The Toronto Rock defeated the Philadelphia Wings by a score of 12-9 in a tightly-contested National Lacrosse League preseason game at Toronto Rock Athletic Centre (TRAC) in Oakville, Ont. on Saturday night.

Rock forward Kasey Beirnes opened the scoring but the Wings answered with three straight goals to eventually take a 4-3 lead into the second quarter. The teams went back-and-forth before halftime as Philadelphia led 7-6 at the break.

Toronto put together a three-goal scoring run of their own to start the second half as Patrick Merrill, Josh Sanderson and Beirnes scored the only goals of the third quarter for a 9-7 Rock lead.

The Wings answered right back to tie the game at 9-9 with 6:09 left in the fourth quarter. However, Toronto responded and ended the game on another three-goal run after Sanderson put the Rock up 11-9 with two minutes left before Cam Woods scored on an empty net.

Josh Sanderson led the way offensively for the Rock with six points (3+3), Blaine Manning recorded five points (1+4) and Scott Evans had four points (3+1) for Toronto. Wings forward Kevin Ross (3+1) and offseason acquisition Kevin Buchanan (2+2) both registered four points for Philadelphia.

The win marked Toronto's first victory at their new practice facility after a 12-8 exhibition loss to the Edmonton Rush on Dec. 8 while improving their overall preseason record to 2-1. Philadelphia fell to 0-2 on the weekend and preseason after their 16-10 loss to the Buffalo Bandits at TRAC on Friday.
