The Philadelphia Wings have named transition player Brodie Merrill as team captain for the second straight year while defenseman Brett Manney, forward Kevin Ross and transition player Max Seibald will serve as assistant captains for the 2013 National Lacrosse League season.

Merrill will wear the captain’s “C” on his jersey again after being awarded the honor in his first season with the team last year. The Georgetown alum joined the team in 2012 in an offseason trade with the Edmonton Rush. Merrill had a productive season last year, tying a career high with 20 goals, added three in the playoffs, and recovered 157 loose balls.

Assistant captains Manney, Ross and Seibald are expected to be team leaders both on and off the floor. To start the season, Manney and Ross will wear the “A” as assistant captains for the Wings.

Seibald served as an assistant captain last year, but he is currently injured and expects to return to the field later this season.

Manney, a Delaware Blue Hen and Philadelphia local, enters his fifth season in the league and third with the Wings. The local product finished the 2012 season with 41 loose balls and 15 forced turnovers.

“I am honored to be named an assistant captain at the start of the season," Manney said. "I will do my best to lead by example and help our team achieve our goals."

Ross, a five-year NLL veteran, was acquired during the offseason from the Minnesota Swarm. The left-handed forward tallied career bests with 59 points (28+31) in 16 games with the Swarm last season.

"Brett and Kevin are both great selections for assistant captains," Merrill said. "Kevin is a smart player who plays with a lot of passion and competes hard. Brett is a local guy that really exemplifies Philly with his tough, unselfish, blue-collar style of play. We are fortunate to have strong leadership from many different players."

The Wings play their regular season opener this Friday, Jan. 11 when they host the Buffalo Bandits at 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Center. The game will be televised live on the NLL on YouTube on The Lacrosse Network.
