Swarm's Callum Crawford takes on Rush's Mark Matthews

Minnesota Swarm forward Callum Crawford takes on Edmonton Rush rookie Mark Matthews in the Fantasy Spotlight for Week #4 of the 2013 NLL Fantasy Game.

Last week’s NLL Fantasy Spotlight saw the Toronto Rock’s Stephan Leblanc take on Gavin Prout from the Colorado Mammoth. On paper, it looked like it would be a pretty close matchup since Leblanc and Prout had very similar fantasy numbers last season. When all was said and done, however, Prout nearly doubled up Leblanc’s fantasy production last weekend. Here are their stats:

Gavin Prout: seven points (1+6) and four loose balls for 20 fantasy points.

Stephan Leblanc: two points (1+1) and five loose balls for 11 fantasy points.

Leblanc fell victim to what seemed to be a defensive showdown against the Philadelphia Wings. Philly beat the Rock in a low-scoring 8-7 game in which goaltender Brandon Miller earned the game MVP with 53 saves. No wonder Leblanc’s fantasy numbers were low! Gavin Prout comes away with the win here.

It will be rookie versus veteran in the Fantasy Spotlight for Week #4, as Mark Matthews of the Edmonton Rush will take on Callum Crawford from the Minnesota Swarm.

Crawford came into the NLL in 2006 with the Calgary Roughnecks. He bounced around to a few teams and saw moderate success until he finally made his way to the Swarm in 2010. That’s when his numbers exploded. He scored 96 points (32+64) that year, which surpassed his point totals from the prior three seasons combined. It wasn’t just a fluke, either. Crawford put up 70 points (27+43) in 2011 and then 83 points (25+58) last season. The Swarm have only played one game so far this year but he had 19 fantasy points.

As the first overall draft pick in the 2012 Entry Draft, Mark Matthews hasn’t surprised anybody with his immediate success in the NLL. He has back-to-back hat tricks in his first two games against Toronto and Washington. With 45 fantasy points, he already ranks among the top ten players in fantasy scoring and is tied for fifth among forwards. His fantasy value has been steadily increasing, but can he keep up this pace?

Both Minnesota and Edmonton will face Washington this weekend which could help either player considering the Stealth currently rank second worst in the league with an average of 14.3 goals against per game. Minnesota also faces the Toronto Rock on Friday.
