Former Cornell and Team Canada goalie Kyle Miller loses battle with cancer

Former Cornell and Team Canada goalie Kyle Miller has lost his battle with cancer but still serves as an inspiration to many.

The lacrosse community lost a fighter on Saturday. Former Team Canada goalie Kyle Miller, who overcame bone cancer to return to help win Ivy League Championships at Cornell and the gold medal for Canada at the 2006 World Championships, passed away on Saturday after a recurrence of Osteosarcoma cancer.

Kyle’s brother Brandon Miller, the starting goalie for the Philadelphia Wings, posted this on Twitter early Saturday morning: “It’s with extreme heavy hearts that after years of pain & tremendous fight, my brother Kyle Miller has passed. #love” (Click here for the Twitter reaction to Kyle’s passing).

Since we last saw Miller on the sideline of the Powerball Lacrosse Tournament in New Jersey, when the Reebok Blacks Out Cancer team that won the $25,000 grand prize in Kyle’s and Chris Sanderson’s honor, he underwent chemotherapy treatment in the Bahamas (according to his blog on KyleMiller35.com) and then returned home to Canada.

Miller was an inspiration to many with his #BeatIt campaign, selling hats and shirts to raise money for more research on Osteosarcoma cancer. His mentor, Chris Sanderson, passed away after a long battle with brain cancer, last June, as the Reebok Blacks Out Cancer team was preparing for the Powerball Tournament. Led by stars like Brodie Merrill, Dan Dawson, Matt Vinc and Zack Greer, the Reebok team won that event and split the proceeds between the Sanderson and Miller families.

A native of Orangeville, Ontario, Miller was best friends with Brodie Merrill growing up. Merrill explained their relationship in a recent Philly.com article this past spring.
