National Lacrosse League fans will once again come together for an annual summer event celebrating their love for the game while raising money for charity.
The 2013 Fann Cup, the 12th annual charity lacrosse tournament played by fans of the NLL, will take place on Saturday, July 13 in Rochester, N.Y. with 10 teams as participants converge from cities such as Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and Toronto.
“We had such a great time we hosted the event that we were happy to do it again,” said Rochester Krewhawks team captain and event co-organizer John Donnelly. “It is a great experience to do something like this for your lacrosse friends, while showing off our great city and raising money for Team TK9.”
Team TK9 will receive the majority of the fundraising money with some monies going to the family of Jeff Miller, who was a local lacrosse player who passed away in June. TK9 is a team established in memory of 12-year-old lacrosse player Tyler Kopp, who died while playing lacrosse in February 2012.
The registration party/meet and greet is set for Friday, July 12 before the tournament begins at Rochester Sports Garden the next day. The weekend of lacrosse celebrates the sport, league, teams and most importantly, the fans, all while raising money for good causes.
The traveling event, which is being hosted by the Rochester Krewhawks after being held in Minnesota in 2012, takes place in a different city each year where the money raised helps support local community projects. NLL players have supported the event in years past by cheering on the teams from the stands.
The tournament began in 2002 after a pickup game in Toronto when a group of Toronto Rock fans challenged the fans of the Buffalo Bandits and Rochester Knighthawks to a friendly game of lacrosse. In a few short weeks, the inaugural Fann Cup was played.
The Fann Cup has raised more than $50,000 for various charities in the first 11 years of the tournament's existence. For more information, visit the official Fann Cup website here.
