NLL fans raised money for charity with 12th annual lacrosse tournament

The 12th annual Fann Cup charity lacrosse tournament, played by fans of the NLL, took place in Rochester this past weekend and was a tremendous success. While the Toronto Roadies won the championship, the event also featured nine other teams from cities such as Buffalo, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Philadelphia, as the 150+ participants combined to raise over $2,000 to support local causes.

"This year's Fann Cup was the biggest yet and it will continue to grow," said tournament co-director John Donnelly. "A large majority of the participants started by watching their favorite NLL team play. Fann Cup has given them the opportunity to play the game they enjoy watching. It's a privilege to be able to bring so many fans together for the weekend to play and talk about a game we all love."

Team TK9, established in memory of 12-year-old lacrosse player Tyler Kopp, who died while playing lacrosse in February 2012, will receive the majority of the fundraising money while donations will also support Tough Miller, which remembers Jeff Miller, a local lacrosse player who passed away in June.

“As one of the organizers of this year’s Fann Cup, I feel honored to have been able to host the tournament in my hometown,” Andrew Vahue told IL Indoor. “Everyone had a great time at the tournament, we raised a lot of money for a local charity, TK9, and we can’t wait to have the opportunity to host again.”

The traveling event, hosted at Rochester Sports Garden this year by the Rochester Krewhawks after being held in Minnesota in 2012, takes place in a different city each year where the money raised helps support local community projects via auctions and raffles. Over $400 was raised this year just from the raffle of a quilt made by Deb McAllister of Buffalo, with the quilt being comprised of t-shirts from the previous 11 Fann Cups. NLL players have supported the event in years past by cheering on the teams from the stands.

The tournament began in 2002 after a pickup game in Toronto when a group of Toronto Rock fans challenged the fans of the Buffalo Bandits and Rochester Knighthawks to a friendly game of lacrosse. In a few short weeks, the inaugural Fann Cup was played.

The Fann Cup has raised more than $50,000 for various charities in the first 12 years of the tournament's existence. For more information, please visit the official Fann Cup website here.
