The Buffalo Bandits and Colorado Mammoth have announced a trade sending rookie forward Carter Bender and two second-round picks, the 18th overall selection in 2013 NLL Entry Draft and Buffalo's second-best second-round pick in the 2014 Draft, to the Mammoth in exchange for defenseman Rory Smith and Colorado's fourth-round draft pick in 2015.

The six-year veteran Smith is considered to be one of the toughest players in the league. The 6'0", 200-pound enforcer recorded 51 penalty minutes, 37 loose balls and 17 forced turnovers in 15 games with the Mammoth last year. Over his career, the Mimico, Ontario native has registered 237 loose balls, 327 penalty minutes and 52 forced turnovers in 85 career games played.

“Rory is a solid defensive defenseman who also brings a dominant physical presence,” said Bandits general manager Steve Dietrich. “At 26 years old, he is a player that will be able to help strengthen our defense both now and in the future.”

Bender, a 24-year-old left-handed scorer, was the 18th overall selection in the 2012 NLL Entry Draft. A 6’4”, 220-pound University of Hartford alumnus, Bender had a goal and two assists in three games played as an NLL rookie.

“We hate to lose a player like Rory,” said Mammoth head coach Bob Hamley. “But we like what Carter can bring to our offense. We’re committed to working hard to turn the draft picks into valuable players that will contribute.”
