The Colorado Mammoth announced that the team has re-signed defenseman Dan Coates to a five-year agreement, pending league approval.
Coates was a college teammate of Mammoth forward Adam Jones, who also recently signed a long-term deal. They were both selected in the first round of the 2011 NLL Entry Draft. Now they’re both locked in with the team for the next half-decade.
“Despite having played in the NLL for just two seasons, Dan is a tremendous leader,” said Mammoth president & general manager Steve Govett. “It comes naturally for him.”
As does stellar defensive play. In his final year of collegiate action, Coates became the first Canisius defenseman to earn First-Team All-Conference honors in school history. As an NLL rookie, Coates recovered 94 loose balls, fifth-most among all non-faceoffmen in the league. Last season, the St. Catharines, Ontario native established himself as an elite defender.
Coates and the Mammoth open training camp on Friday, Nov. 15. Colorado's home and season opener on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center is set for Saturday, Dec. 28.
