In three-plus decades in lacrosse, Colorado Mammoth forward John Grant Jr. has done virtually everything. He’s won championships, MVP awards, scoring titles, set records and graced the covers of magazines. He’s triumphed while representing his country in international competition, and been an all-star countless times. That’s virtually everything. Now, add team captain to his resume – after all, it’s a first.

“It’s a tremendous honor in that I was voted captain by my teammates, my peers,” said Grant. “I’m overwhelmed that all of the hard work and dedication I have given to this team and this city have been recognized.”

The 13-year veteran has led the National Lacrosse League in goals (129) and points (290) since he was acquired by the Mammoth in the fall of 2010. He has been an alternate captain for Colorado for the past three seasons. Now, he’ll don the ‘C’ on his chest.

“John has worked incredibly hard since his arrival to this franchise, and his work this off-season has been exemplary,” said Mammoth president and general manager Steve Govett. “He has been, and will continue to be, a great leader.”

Grant was captain of the West Division in the 2012 NLL All-Star Game, but has never received the honor for an entire season.

John Gallant, the franchise’s all-time leader in games played (176), is once again an assistant. He was the team’s captain in 2010 and 2011.

Third-year defenseman Dan Coates is the other assistant captain. The former first-round draft-pick signed a Mammoth record-tying five-year contract in November.

For the first time in franchise history, the captain and both assistants reside in Denver during the season.

The Mammoth's Opening Night is this Saturday, Dec. 28 at 7pm MT on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center against the Edmonton Rush. Tickets start at just $10 and are on sale now at the Pepsi Center Box Office, all TicketHorse outlets, online at TicketHorse.com or by phone at 303.53.HORSE.
