With the start of the NLL regular season on Saturday, Dec. 28, registration for the 2014 NLL Fantasy Challenge is now open! Build your fantasy lacrosse roster under the salary cap and compete against friends and other managers for great weekly prizes and the overall grand prize. Fans can begin to register their teams for Week #1 by clicking here.

The Fantasy Spotlight is a weekly series where two players are pitted against one another in a head-to-head fantasy battle to determine who the more valuable fantasy player was that weekend. Eventually winners get matched up against other winners in a tournament style structure until a single player is crowned the king of the Spotlight at the end of the season. Last year those bragging rights went to faceoff and loose ball specialist Geoff Snider. Snider faced and defeated fantasy All-Stars Callum Crawford and John Grant Jr., rookie Shayne Jackson, and even his own brother Bob Snider to earn that title. Who will be this year’s Fantasy Spotlight Champion?

The first Fantasy Spotlight of the season will feature a matchup between two high-scoring forwards. Kevin Crowley of the Philadelphia Wings will face off against Mark Matthews of the Edmonton Rush. This should make for an interesting battle. Both Crowley and Matthews are currently priced at $22 apiece and put up very similar numbers to one another last season in terms of both real life and fantasy points.

Kevin Crowley was the number one overall pick in the 2011 NLL Entry Draft. He made an immediate impact on the Philadelphia Wings by scoring 36 goals and adding 35 assists for 71 points in his first NLL season. He was runner-up for the NLL Rookie of the Year Award and although Adam Jones beat him out for that honor, Crowley did get some redemption by defeating Jones in the Week #2 Fantasy Spotlight last season. Though Crowley had a comparably productive season last year with 34 goals and 38 assists for 72 total points, his fantasy production actually went down by a little bit since he had fewer LBs.

Like Crowley, Mark Matthews was also a first overall pick, but in the 2012 NLL Entry Draft. Matthews was named the NLL Rookie of the Year last season with 38 goals and 31 assists for 69 points. He did have fewer fantasy points in 2013 compared to Crowley, but one thing that will be working in his favor this weekend is his matchup against the Colorado Mammoth. Matthews played at the Pepsi Center just once so far in his NLL career but it was a memorable performance considering he scored five goals and was named the game MVP.
