With just one week left in the 2014 NLL regular season before playoffs, Stephen Stamp has selected the top three player performances from the weekend, which featured five games, with his Three Stars of Week 17 on IL Indoor.
"Curtis Dickson scored 7 goals against the Edmonton Rush on Saturday without going horizontal," Stamp writes. "That is surprising from the forward that’s come to be known as Superman, but it displayed the lethal shot that makes him such a threat any time the Roughnecks have the ball. His performance, which included the winning goal in overtime, also made it rather easy to select this week’s IL Indoor National Lacrosse League 3 Stars’ top spot.
"There were lots of other players who had great games over the weekend, though, making it much more difficult to separate the other pair of top performers from the Honourable Mentions, many of whom could have easily made the grade. Make the jump to see who earns the laurels this week.
Curtis Dickson, Calgary Roughnecks
His first goal came on bench transition after he received a breakaway pass. His second also came on the run, cutting across the top to his off side and unleashing a deadly sidearm rip. Then, he scored five goals that were almost carbon copies of one another. They were all from slightly varying degrees below the hip off a solid foot plant from the left wing shooter spot. It’s hard to believe that a player could score virtually the same goal five times in a row against a defence as good as Edmonton’s and a goalie as good as Aaron Bold. Just shows you how deadly accurate the shots were. A truly remarkable shooting display.
Matt Vinc, Rochester Knighthawks
45 saves on 49 shots, .918 save percentage
Any time you give up only 4 goals to an NLL team, you have pulled off a brilliant feat. The fact that Vinc made it look routine only reinforces that he is still the gold standard for goalies. You can argue that he wasn’t challenged much because the Knighthawks defence played so well, which is definitely true. But any time you have NLL forwards looking as uncertain of their shots as Vinc did the Bandits Saturday, you’re covering your net exceptionally well.
Logan Schuss, Minnesota Swarm
4 goals, 3 assists
Schuss continues to improve as the season goes on, his game looking as mature as it ever has on Saturday as he tried to keep the Swarm in the game against Colorado. We knew coming in that Schuss was a terrific shooter, but his all-around game is growing by leaps and bounds.
