The Buffalo Bandits defeated the Philadelphia Wings 15-11 before a sellout crowd of 18,690 at HSBC Arena in Buffalo on Saturday night. Mark Steenhuis led the Bandits with four goals and four assists on the night that the Bandits unveiled their 2008 championship banner and honored the late Tom Borrelli. Geoff Snider had a goal and five assists for the Wings and won 24 out of 27 faceoffs.
Game scoring got off to a fast start. Geoff Snider won the game's opening faceoff, and teammate Drew Westervelt scored ten seconds into the game for the first goal of the NLL season to give Philadelphia a 1-0 lead.
The Minnesota Swarm topped the Buffalo Bandits in a preseason game at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Six Nations on Saturday. Buffalo led 4-0 after the first quarter, but Minnesota rallied with nine consecutive goals in the second, taking a 9-8 lead into the half and never looking back. Nick Patterson played the entire 60 minutes in goal for the Swarm, allowing just 11 goals against one of the league's most dangerous offenses.
Kevin Ross led the Swarm offensively with three goals, while Ohio State product Kevin Buchanan scored twice. Newcomer Kevin Fines added a single for Minnesota.
The Buffalo Bandits acquired Tom Montour from the Calgary Roughnecks in exchange for the Bandits first round selection in the 2010 Entry Draft.
Montour has played six seasons in the NLL, including two with Buffalo (2004-2005). In 55 career games, Montour has scored 30 goals and 53 assists and scooped 292 loose balls. He also had success in the faceoff circle for the Bandits in 2005, winning 15 of 32 draws.
Montour was acquired by Calgary with the fifth overall selection in Friday's dispersal draft.
