The Buffalo Bandits defeated the Philadelphia Wings 15-11 before a sellout crowd of 18,690 at HSBC Arena in Buffalo on Saturday night. Mark Steenhuis led the Bandits with four goals and four assists on the night that the Bandits unveiled their 2008 championship banner and honored the late Tom Borrelli. Geoff Snider had a goal and five assists for the Wings and won 24 out of 27 faceoffs.
Game scoring got off to a fast start. Geoff Snider won the game's opening faceoff, and teammate Drew Westervelt scored ten seconds into the game for the first goal of the NLL season to give Philadelphia a 1-0 lead.
After a distinguished 18-year professional indoor lacrosse career that includes four Championships, nine All-Pro Awards and two championship game Most Valuable Player Awards, future hall-of-fame goalie Dallas Eliuk has announced his retirement. "I've made the decision to support the Jax this year through assistant coaching and continued ambassadorship of the sport in schools and the community", said Eliuk, among his comments on retirement.
The Philadelphia Wings topped the New York Titans, 13-11, in preseason action at The Center Circle in Rahway, NJ on Saturday. Kyle Wailes and Drew Westervelt led the Wings with three goals apiece, while Rob Blasdell earned the win in goal, allowing just 10 goals in 55 minutes of action.
The Titans controlled the game early, jumping out to a 4-3 lead after the first quarter and an 8-6 lead at the half. However, Blasdell and the Wings defense held New York scoreless in the third quarter, while the offense rattled off four goals to take a 10-6 lead.
