The Toronto Rock edged the New York Titans, 15-14, to open the 2009 regular season. The game, held at BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, FL, was the first-ever Florida Lacrosse Cup. Game MVP Blaine Manning scored four goals, including the game-winner with 38 seconds left in regulation.
After 2008 Goalie of the Year Bob Watson stuffed New York's Pat Merrill's potential game-winner, Stephen Hoar transitioned the ball upfield to Manning, who buried the game-winner past New York goaltender Matt Vinc.
The Boston Blazers defeated the Toronto Rock, 14-10, in a preseason game at Iroquois Lacrosse Arena on Sunday. Dan Dawson led a balanced Blazers attack with two goals, while Daryl Veltman, Matt Lyons and Sean Morris each scored twice as well.
Anthony Cosmo was once again stellar in goal, allowing just three goal in the first half. Nick Rose and Mike Poulin played a quarter each, allowing seven goals in the second half. Boston led 7-3 at halftime.
The Rochester Knighthawks fell to the rival Toronto Rock 14-13 in a National Lacrosse League scrimmage game this morning at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.
The Knighthawks were led by five points from Joe Walters (3 2) and three points from Shawn Evans (2 1) and two goals from Aaron Wilson. Toronto got three goals from Luke Wiles and two goals each from Jason Crosbie, John Gignac. Pat O'Toole made the start for Rochester, while Bob Watson started for the Rock. O'Toole allowed four goals before giving way to rookie netminder Ben VanEvery. Watson played the full two quarters and gave up seven goals.
