Today the National Lacrosse League (NLL), the largest men’s professional indoor lacrosse league in North America, announces the conclusion of the 2018 season.
Saturday, June 9th, the Saskatchewan Rush captured their third title in four years, beating the Rochester Knighthawks 15-10 in Game 3 of the NLL Finals, hoisting the NLL Cup in front of 13,645 fans in SaskTel Centre.
“It wasn’t easy but that makes it sweeter,” said Head Coach Derek Keenan, during the postgame press conference. “I felt good about this opportunity to be at home for Game 3 and we took advantage of that. It was a grinder of a game, but I think we maybe had a little more gas in the tank. I really believe we earned this… We were focused from the first day of training camp on winning this championship. Mission accomplished.”
Rush forward, Jeff Shattler, was named NLL Finals MVP after a 5-point night (4 G, 1 A). “I’ve been waiting for this feeling for a while,” said Shattler, “We worked hard all season and we deserve it. We played well in front of this great crowd. I love playing in front of this crowd – the best fans in the league.”
After a 2-6 record to start the season, the Rochester Knighthawks took a more trying path to the NLL Finals. “It is an awful feeling right now, but I can’t say enough about their compete level and what they do for each other,” said Head Coach Mike Hasen. “This group is special… because we weren’t supposed to be here.”
Warrior Lacrosse, in association with Whistle Sports, will produce its third and final episode of Game Day Raw, featuring the NLL Finals. The mini-series highlights all access footage, from the locker room to the field, giving fans a up close and personal view of the players.
Focus will now turn towards the League’s next major event, the 2018 Expansion Draft. Slated for July 16, 2018, the Philadelphia Wings and San Diego Seals will make picks via conference call, with the Wings selecting first in the Expansion Draft.
