NLL Doppelgängers

We’ve all been there, you see someone, and you realize they remind you of someone else. It nags at you as you keep seeing them, trying to figure out who it is. Then, finally, ah ha! It comes to you… Alex Simmons looks just like James Marsden. You know, Cyclops from the X-Men films or Corny Collins from Hairspray?

That specific example is what prompted the idea of an entire story of celebrity lookalikes for National Lacrosse League players. But that pair of doppelgängers, the first in the list below, was just the start. Reviewing the League’s preseason headshots led to the 10 (well, kind of 11) pairs below that, after you see them, you won’t be able to unsee.

Most of the celebrities are actors. Some are characters. All are meant in good fun. Enjoy.

1. Alex Simmons, Albany FireWolves & James Marsden

Marsden played twin brothers Steve and Ben Wood in the hit Netflix dark comedy Dead to Me. Be honest, if Simmons weren’t wearing an Albany jersey in his picture, would you be sure which was which with just a quick look?

2. Brad McCulley, Vancouver Warriors & Jerry O’Connell

Okay, one of them would need to wear some coloured contact lenses to really fool people into confusing them, but couldn’t you see McCulley stepping into the role of one of O’Connell’s characters for a prequel?

3. Jordan Gilles, Colorado Mammoth & Randall Park

Put him in a family photo with Jenna Fischer, and you’d be hard pressed to tell Gilles apart from the young Park, who was employed by Jim and Pam for one of the best pranks on Dwight Schrute in the American version of The Office.

4. Eric Fannell, Ottawa Black Bears & Vinnie Jones

Jones stole the show as Big Chris in the cult hit Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. He was also a pretty good athlete himself, known before his acting career as a professional European soccer player.

5A. Nathan Grenon, Toronto Rock & Gaston

He’s a lot nicer than Gaston, but try to tell me that Grenon doesn’t resemble the character from the animated Beauty and the Beast.

5B. Grenon and Luke Evans

The folks casting the live-action version of Beauty and the Beast obviously agree that there is a similarity, because the actor they cast to play Gaston bears no small resemblance to Grenon, as well.

6. Zack Deaken, San Diego Seals & Orlando Bloom

There were a few players who came to mind when looking at the star of The Lord of the Rings (Legolas) and Pirates of the Caribbean (Will Turner), but none captured the swashbuckling style quite the way that Deaken does.

7. Cam MacLeod, Calgary Roughnecks & Dominic Monaghan

We remain in the world of The Lord of the Rings. While MacLeod’s 6’1” height makes him a bit tall for a hobbit, his headshot suggests he could easily channel the playful courage of Merry Brandybuck.

8. Nick Damude, Philadelphia Wings & Jack Black

This may just be the best pair yet. Can’t you just see Damude shredding on a Stratocaster at the front of the class in School of Rock?

9. Graeme Hossack, Halifax Thunderbirds & Mr. Clean

Same friendly demeanour, same shiny pate, and two of the most imposing physical figures you’ll come across. Hossack even shares a knack for mopping the floor with his doppelgänger (in Hossack’s case, with opponents).
