Last weekend, on a cold night near the shores of Lake Erie, the San Diego Seals handed the Buffalo Bandits the club’s very first loss of the season when Wes Berg scored a dramatic overtime goal, giving the Seals a 14-13 victory.
Exactly one week later, these two uber-talented organizations once again locked horns, this time on a considerably warmer night and close to the waves of the Pacific Ocean. While the Western New York opening of the home-and-home was nothing short of scintillating, this Southern California sequel turned out to be just as awesome, with the defending champion Bandits earning a hard-fought 13-12 conquest.
The second epic Bandits/Seals battle featured an incredible one-handed reverse goal by Tre Leclaire along with a tie-breaking score from the always-clutch Kyle Buchanan, who supplied Buffalo with the 13th and deciding addition to the scoreboard.
Buchanan grabbed himself a hat trick in the tussle, with Josh Byrne scoring one and assisting on five more. Dhane Smith filled the stat sheet per usual, etching two goals and two helpers to his name.
On the San Diego side of the boards, Leclaire’s showmanship was part of a four-goal effort, while Berg scored twice and assisted four times. Dylan Watson furnished three scores and three separate passes to his buddies, as San Diego came up just short.
These two franchises most certainly bring out the best in each other.
The Thompson Brothers Put On A Show In Toronto
Lyle did Lyle things in @GeorgiaSwarmLAX‘s 11-10 win over Toronto, and he did them well.
The Paramount Fine Foods Centre was the setting for a thrilling Saturday night overtime showdown between the Georgia Swarm and Toronto Rock. The visiting Swarm left the building with an 11-10 victory, after what was a highly entertaining skirmish.
This contest was nip and tuck throughout with Georgia holding a 10-8 fourth-quarter lead before Toronto’s Corey Small took matters into his own hands, securing two dynamic goals, including the game-tying effort with a mere 27 seconds remaining. Then, come the fifth quarter, Miles Thompson sent the home crowd to their cars in a sour mood after connecting on the game-winner, 6:28 into the bonus lacrosse session.
The aforementioned Thompson finished with two goals and one assist, while his superstar brother Lyle Thompson added three scores and four helpers to his already legendary career resume. Former MVP Shayne Jackson underwrote a robust effort of his own tallying a hat trick, to go along with three assists.
On the losing Toronto side, Small notched five goals and one assist, Chris Boushy netted a hat trick, while Dan Craig and Tom Schreiber dished out a combined 11 assists. The Rock have now lost three straight.
Last season represented a magical ride for the Albany FireWolves, with the upstart club reaching the NLL Finals and an eventual loss to the Buffalo Bandits. This campaign has been a completely different story for the squad from the New York state capital, entering Saturday’s home matchup with the Philadelphia Wings holders of a disappointing 2-8 record. Maybe the tide is about to turn for the young and talented roster, as the FireWolves put together a stellar showing at MVP Arena, defeating the Wings 11-6.
Philadelphia claimed the game’s very first goal. From that minute forward, Albany absolutely dominated the proceedings, scoring seven of the first half’s final eight lamplighters to take a 7-2 lead into halftime, followed by an easy second-half path to victory.
Doug Jamieson put on a goaltending masterclass—locking up 46 saves on 52 shots on goal! Tye Kurtz led the way on offense with four goals and two assists, while John Piatelli tabulated two scores and three helpers. Five FireWolves players scored exactly one goal, including defending rookie of the year Alex Simmons.
Joe Resetarits posted one goal and three assists for the Wings on a night when nothing seemed to go right for the Pennsylvanians.
In the battle of rookie sensations, Brennan O’Neill and Dyson Williams treated fans to a back-to-back goal sequence, midway through the third quarter.
The Knighthawks Pull Off An Impressive Road Win
The @RocKnighthawks fired 50 shots at Calgary and came away with the 15-10 road win.
The 4-7 Rochester Knighthawks trekked their way to Alberta’s largest city, leaving WestJet Field at Scotiabank Saddledome winners of a comfortable 15-10 entanglement over the Calgary Roughnecks.
Rochester hit the ground running from the opening faceoff, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and a subsequent 10-5 halftime advantage. As the game progressed, the separation between the two teams never grew closer than four goals. The Knighthawks were in the driver’s seat for the duration of the festivities.
Thomas McConvey played out of his mind, boasting of five goals and two assists, while Connor Fields and Ryan Lanchbury were in exceedingly charitable moods, coalescing on a sterling 13 assists.
On the Calgary side of the equation, Curtis Dickson gave it his best, scoring four and assisting on five others, but it was far from enough to match the Knighthawks’ onslaught.
12,378 lacrosse fanatics were on hand for this unlikely upset.
