Oakville, ON – Toronto Rock Owner, President and GM Jamie Dawick today announced the signing of unrestricted free agents Tom Schreiber and Kieran McArdle to one-year agreements. The two stars of the outdoor game will be attempting to make the transition to the indoor game with the Rock this season.
“We were a five-win team last year, we have some guys moving on and some injuries to deal with,” explained Dawick. “Tom and Kieran are world class players with an interest in playing the indoor game. They are both highly skilled offensive players with as much talent as anyone. They have made a commitment to investing the time to get ready for our training camp and have an opportunity to make our club.”
The 24-year old Schreiber attended Princeton University and is regarded as one of the best players to ever pull on a Tigers jersey. He finished his collegiate career with the most goals, assists and points by a Tigers midfielder. A three-time United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) first team All-American, Schreiber has continued to pile up the accolades since finishing his NCAA career as he was named Major League Lacrosse’s (MLL) MVP in 2016.
“I am excited for the opportunity to compete in the NLL and to join a phenomenal organization in the Toronto Rock,” expressed Schreiber. “I’ve always been drawn to the physicality and competitiveness of the league and I’m thankful for the opportunity. Like most American lacrosse players, I have very little indoor experience, but I plan on putting in as much time as I can to adjust to the game. I acknowledge the difficulty of the transition and I plan on doing everything I can to prepare. I think the biggest adjustment will be shooting. Clearly, the differences in the size of the nets and goaltenders will be a major adjustment. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
McArdle attended St. John’s University and is the most decorated player in program history as a two-time (USILA) All-American second team selection and a two-time Big East Offensive Player of the Year. McArdle remains the Red Storm’s all-time leader in career points, goals and assists and was the first player in St. John’s history to amass 200 points, 100 assists and 100 goals in a career. The 24-year old, 6’1” left-handed shooting attackman was named the MLL’s rookie of the year in 2014 and has consistently put up big numbers in subsequent seasons.
“I feel the NLL is a good fit for me as I am a young player and have the time to learn the indoor game at this point in my career,” said McArdle. “I’m looking forward to the challenges of playing on a smaller field and definitely the size of the nets.”
The Toronto Rock will announce their full training camp schedule and exhibition game schedule shortly. The 2017 NLL season will begin on the road for the Rock at Rochester on Thurs., Dec. 29. The team’s home opener is on Sat., Jan. 14 against the Saskatchewan Rush at Air Canada Centre.
