Completing his 13th NLL season and fifth in Rochester, Coates was named the captain of the Knighthawks before the 2023-24 season. In five seasons with the team, he ranks second all-time in blocks (49), third in caused turnovers (56), and fifth in loose-ball recoveries (344). He was originally selected eighth overall by the Colorado Mammoth in 2011.

Along with playing and coaching up younger Knighthawks defensemen, Coates is also a coach for Team Canada, the Upstate Collegiate Box Lacrosse League, and the Ontario Junior Lacrosse Association. Since 2022, he’s been the head coach of the Hawkeyes in the UCBLL, coaching college-aged Americans to increase their exposure to the sport. His former players include Jake Piseno and Clifford Gaston, both drafted to Rochester after standout summers under Coates. This summer, he is serving as the Head Coach for The St. Catharines Athletics Jr. A program.

Before his time in Rochester, Coates spent nine seasons with the Colorado Mammoth. A former first-round selection (eighth overall) by Colorado in the 2011 NLL Entry Draft, the Canisius University product departed the Mammoth ranked second in franchise history in caused turnovers (139), fourth in face-off wins (477) and games played (128), and seventh in loose balls (492).

A four-year captain in Colorado, he led the Mammoth to an unprecedented eight straight playoff appearances from 2012-2019, including a pair of trips to the Western Division Final over a three-year span.
