Rush’S Matthews Wins Air Canada Wingman For Week 12

The National Lacrosse League has announced Saskatchewan Rush forward Mark Matthews as the “Air Canada Wingman of the Week” award winner for Week 12 of the 2016 NLL season.

Matthews posted a league-high eight assists and added two fourth-quarter goals in Saskatchewan’s record-setting 24-16 road win over the Vancouver Stealth on Saturday. Matthews currently ranks fourth in assists (40) and eighth in NLL scoring with 62 points (22+40) in 10 games played. The 10 points marked a season-high for Matthews, who has posted at least two assists in every game this year along with four or more points in nine games to help the Rush to a 7-3 record.

The 26-year-old was named the 2015 Champion’s Cup Finals MVP after leading the postseason in scoring en route to the Rush’s first-ever title after his 115-point regular season campaign, which ranked second in the league and third-most all-time. The Oshawa, Ont. native, who played collegiately at the University of Denver, was the first overall pick of the 2012 NLL Draft. The fourth-year pro won the 2013 NLL Rookie of the Year award, was named 2015 NLL All-Pro First Team, and has recorded at least 30 goals and 30 assists in each of his first three seasons.

Air Canada is the Official Airline Partner for the NLL. Each week, an NLL player will receive the “Air Canada Wingman of the Week” award based on their performance on the turf with respect to passing prowess and playmaking abilities.
