Social Recap: Philadelphia Awarded 11th Franchise

Wednesday was a memorable day for the National Lacrosse League (NLL) and Philadelphia sports, as it was officially announced that a franchise would be returning to the city of brotherly love. This news comes less than a month after it was announced that San Diego was granted an expansion team.

Although the unnamed Philly franchise will not be making its debut until December of 2018, there was already quite a bit of excitement that could be felt at the Wells Fargo Center, as members of the lacrosse league’s front office, front office staff from neighboring teams and media gathered to listen to the owners and mayor express their thoughts on why they wanted to bring the sport back to the city.

Comcast Spectacor President Dave Scott, NLL Commissioner Nick Sakiewicz, and Philadelphia mayor Jim Kenny all shared their enthusiasm that lacrosse was finally coming back to a place where it never should have left.

Sakiewicz explained why it was a priority for Philadelphia was next on the list to gain an expansion team.

“Philadelphia was such a great place for lacrosse, the Wings had a good history here and it was kind of sad that it left. We were really focused on trying to get a team back here and today is a culmination of all of that hard work.”

Mayor Kenny expressed to the crowd that he believes the franchise should share the same name as the one that left. “I like the name the Philadelphia Wings,” he said with a smile.

Philadelphia sports fans will also have the opportunity to make their voices heard by voting for what they think the new franchise should be named on phillylax2018.com.
