Get Ready for Week 13 in the NLL

Black Bears, Shake-Ups, and Thunderbirds, Oh My!

What a season so far for Halifax and Ottawa! Despite a slew of mixed results in the early weeks, both teams now find themselves amid two exciting playoff bids, with a win for either team hosting the power to alter the flow of the next eight weeks. The Thunderbirds are looking confident heading into the weekend opener, now brandishing a three-game win streak, a welcome change for the team compared to their loss spell in the early weeks of the season. Their quick substitution game and intensity in transition have more than earned their number six spot on the scoreboard, but they’re in no position to get too comfortable. The Black Bears are breathing down their necks in the standings, holding an identical 5-4 record from the number seven spot. In their past weekend win in Albany, Ottawa looked to have made good use of their Week 11 bye, cinching up much-needed aspects of their backside offense, stacking up a hearty 18 goals against the Firewolves for captain Jeff Teat’s first nine-point since Week 7. Ottawa is on track to make a solid push up the rankings here in the second half of the season, and if Halifax isn’t quick enough to find the backside cutters on Friday, it could spell disaster for their playoff bid.

No Love for Thy Neighbor on the West Coast

The Desert Dogs are back on the road for an early (by West Coast standards) Friday evening contest at the Loud House, the first official West Coast rematch since their meeting in Week 2. Coming off a three-game losing streak and a long doubleheader weekend in Week 12, Las Vegas is overdue for a win, but the Mammoth has no plans to let ‘em off easy! Colorado is suiting up looking for their seventh win of the season this weekend, as well for their own Marvel Super Hero theme night, unveiling earlier this week their Captain America jerseys designed by award-winning Native American artist and writer from the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, the late Jeffrey Veregge– a design fans might recognize from the Philadelphia Wings’ own Marvel Night in Week 11. The Mammoth are currently sitting very comfortably in the number four spot in the League standings, just a hair behind the 6-4 Roughnecks, who coincidentally, also just faced Las Vegas in both of the teams’ second doubleheader games this past weekend. A win this weekend could change the tide of both Las Vegas and Colorado next eight weeks; potentially sparking a meteoric rise through the standings for the Desert Dogs should they win (and continue winning), and could slip the Mammoth back into the top three.

The Warriors Faceoff with the Green Stampede

We are back in Rogers Arena for Friday Night on TSN, bringing together two teams on the edge; Saskatchewan is toeing the line between the number one and two slots on the leaderboards, and Vancouver is on the precipice of falling out of the Elite Eight. Despite falling from the Power Rankings following a tough loss to Calgary in Week 12, the Warriors still have several notable wins under their belt, sneaking a victory past Ottawa and San Diego, as well as a four-goal dub over Calgary earlier in the season. While their past weekend win over Las Vegas kept Vancouver on the leaderboard, their matchup against the now 8-2 Rush could spell out a game of catch-up for the Warriors. Saskatchewan boasts a mess of jolly green giants on both sides of the ball, in the form of Keegan Bell, Bobby Kidd III, and Mike Triolo, as well as two of the currently most talked about goalies of the season, Thomas “Stops” Kiazyk and Frank Scigliano, now in his second week back after taking some time to welcome his daughter into the world. The Rush are shot-heavy and win-hungry and do not plan to leave Vancouver 8-3.

The Shooter Showdown of the Season in Toronto

Continuing our series of early season rematches, Georgia ships up North for another exciting bout in Mississauga. The last time the Swarm saw the Rock this season was in Week 3, in which Lyle Thompson picked up a last-minute goal to hammer in the Swarm’s second consecutive win of the season. At the time, however, the Rock were still missing team captain Challen Rogers and faceoff specialist TD Ierlan, and Latrell Harris and Tom Schreiber had also just been returned to the Injured Reserve List following reinjuries in their season opener against the Ottawa Black Bears. This will be the first time this season that Georgia comes face to face with Toronto at full offensive strength, but with recent injuries and adjustments to their defensive line, the Rock may have their work cut out for them. With the reactivation of forward Miles Thompson from the Injured Reserve in Week 8, the Swarm are also playing at full offensive strength with all three Thompson’s back on the floor– a combination the Toronto Rock has yet to see this season. Rock and Swarm fans alike should strap in for another exciting shootout at Paramount Fine Foods Centre starting at 7:00 PM ET this Saturday, February 22.

The Wings Settle in for a Make-or-Break Evening in Albany

Philly has found themselves between a rock and a hard place the last few weeks, now fighting to end a three-game loss streak against the equally troubled Albany Firewolves. The two teams find themselves caught in a standings impasse, as the Wings struggle to break their 0.500 with a win to inch themselves closer to a playoff slot, while the Firewolves look to pull themselves up from rock bottom. Philly and Albany both pride themselves on their firepower, calling themselves home to several of the League’s most impressive and exciting offensive players, including Alex Simmons and Dyson Willians, as well as the much-publicized rookie combo, Brennan O’Neill and Mikey Sowers. However, despite the obvious muscle from the forwards, both teams have found themselves scrambling to cover ground on the defensive end, owing their last three losses to a lack of communication and cohesion in that department. Their Saturday night matchup will all come down to who makes the adjustment on defense and who controls the momentum at the faceoff X, potentially setting the tone for the rest of their respective seasons.

Rochester has their Eyes on an Upset

While at our current juncture, the playoff possibilities for the Knighthawks seem few and far between– however, with the much-needed opportunity to blow Calgary out of the water, Rochester has the potential to ring in the second upset of the season at Scotiabank Saddledome. Compared to their Upstate counterparts in Buffalo, the Knighthawks have been having some trouble generating on the offensive end. While standouts Connor Fields and Ryan Lanchbury have kept the Rochester logo present on the individual stat leaderboards, their individual accomplishments have yet to fully translate in the win column. Their win in Philadelphia looked to be a step in the right direction, but a second road loss in Saskatchewan this past weekend has only made the rest of the season more uncertain. However, San Diego’s win over Buffalo Saturday night has only proven that nothing is guaranteed in this League, and the tides can shift at any moment. If the Knighthawks can effectively react to Calgary’s two-man sweep off the ball and prevent draw and feeds to the inside cutters, a surprise win over the current number three is not out of the question.

Revenge is a Dish Best Served… with a Salt Rim?

The Bandits are shipping off in search of warmer weather– and a little bit of payback! After the upset of the season (so far), Buffalo has a lot to make up for this weekend during their trip to San Diego. The Seals did a masterful job of keeping the ball-carrier pressured and the off-ball Bandits forwards out of the play in Week 12, and with goalkeeper Christopher Origlieri locking down the front door, Buffalo will have to find a way to avoid the one-on-one with the Seals’ defenders. At home, our San Diegan hosts are gearing up for a weekend of good vibes, good ball, and good drinks at their Margaritaville theme night, featuring a live halftime performance by the late Jimmy Buffett’s guitarist, Mac McAnally. “Buffalo, they’re a heck of a team, and that’s not an easy building to get a win in,” Captain Wes Berg told Maki Jenner and Cooper Perkins, hosts of NLL Box Out, following their Week 12 win. For San Diego, a repeat win over the Bandits could place them securely in the top eight, all but guaranteeing their slot in the postseason, and potentially knocking Buffalo out of their comfortable position atop the League standings. “You [have] to get rolling at the right time to get in the playoffs.”
