For two decades, Matt Vinc set the standard for goaltending in the National Lacrosse League.
From his first minutes with the San Jose Stealth to championship runs in Rochester and Buffalo, Vinc built a career defined by consistency, longevity and winning. By the time he stepped away from the game after 20 NLL seasons, his résumé included six championships, a League-record eight Goaltender of the Year awards and his name atop nearly every major career goaltending category.

Vinc entered the NLL as the sixth overall selection in the 2005 NLL Draft by the San Jose Stealth. His first season offered only a brief glimpse of what was to come, appearing in four games before being selected by the expansion New York Titans ahead of the 2007 season.
In New York, Vinc quickly developed into a full-time starter. Over three seasons with the Titans, he established himself as one of the League’s top young goaltenders and helped New York reach the 2009 NLL Championship Game.
When the franchise relocated to Orlando for the 2010 season, Vinc took another major step forward. He finished the year with a .810 save percentage and 9.51 goals-against average while earning the first Goaltender of the Year award of his career.
It would be the first of eight.
Following the 2010 season, Vinc was selected first overall by Colorado in the Orlando Titans dispersal draft before being dealt to Rochester in a blockbuster trade involving John Grant Jr.
The move helped shape the next era of Knighthawks lacrosse.
Vinc won Goaltender of the Year in his first season in Rochester in 2011, but the defining stretch of his Knighthawks career began one year later.
Rochester captured the 2012 NLL Championship, then did it again in 2013.
In 2014, the Knighthawks completed something that had never been accomplished in League history, winning their third consecutive championship. Vinc was in net for all three, helping Rochester become the NLL’s first three-peat champion.
The individual accolades piled up alongside the championships. Vinc was named Goaltender of the Year in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2018 during his time with Rochester. His combination of size, positioning, preparation and durability made him one of the most reliable players in the League year after year.
By the end of his Rochester tenure, Vinc had already built a Hall of Fame-caliber résumé.
He wasn’t finished.

Vinc signed with the Buffalo Bandits ahead of the 2018-19 season and immediately made an impact.
In his first season in Buffalo, he earned his seventh Goaltender of the Year award and helped lead the Bandits to the NLL Finals. Three years later, at age 40, Vinc posted one of the best seasons of his career.
He went 14-4 during the 2021-22 regular season, led the League with 747 saves and posted a .807 save percentage on his way to a record-extending eighth Goaltender of the Year award.
But the defining moments of Vinc’s Buffalo career were still ahead.
In 2023, the Bandits returned to the NLL Finals and defeated the Colorado Mammoth to capture their first championship since 2008. Vinc saved one of his best performances for the deciding Game 3, holding Colorado to just four goals as Buffalo brought the Cup back to Banditland.
The Bandits repeated in 2024.
Then they did it again in 2025.
Three consecutive championships in Rochester. Three consecutive championships in Buffalo.
Vinc became a six-time NLL champion and completed the second three-peat of his career, accomplishing the feat with two different franchises more than a decade apart.
Few goaltenders in professional lacrosse history can match Vinc’s combination of peak performance and longevity.
He finished his career as the NLL’s all-time regular-season leader in goaltender wins with 182, saves with 11,823 and minutes played with more than 17,800.
His postseason résumé was just as remarkable. Vinc went 40-17 in playoff decisions while recording 2,122 postseason saves, finishing as the League’s all-time playoff leader in goaltender wins and saves.
Across the regular season and playoffs, Vinc accumulated 222 wins and 13,945 saves over a career that stretched across three decades of NLL lacrosse.

Those numbers tell the story of sustained greatness, but Vinc’s impact went beyond the record book.

For 20 seasons, No. 48 was a constant.
Different cities. Different teammates. Different eras of the League.
The result rarely changed.
Vinc gave his teams a chance to win every night, and when the games mattered most, he repeatedly delivered. He won his first championship in Rochester in 2012 and his sixth in Buffalo 13 years later, an extraordinary stretch of success at a position where consistency is notoriously difficult to maintain.
He leaves the game having been part of two dynasties and with a collection of records that may stand for years to come.
From San Jose to New York and Orlando, from a historic three-peat in Rochester to another in Buffalo, Matt Vinc didn’t simply have one of the greatest goaltending careers in NLL history.
He helped define what greatness at the position looks like.
